Carbon Accounting SaaS for Taiwanese Manufacturers
Designed and built a clickable carbon accounting product for a Taipei software company that sells to small and mid-size manufacturers: a collection tracker for every site and source, utility bill upload with OCR review, and a GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 inventory where any figure opens the bill, factor and formula behind it.
Most of our work is under NDA. Per agreement, we can share the work but not the company details - all names and identifying information shown here have been changed.
Dashboard, collection tracker, utility bills inbox, bill review and the inventory with its number trail panel. Each of the 22 demo bills opens its own review screen.
Electricity is reported both ways: 2,969 t location-based and 2,371 t market-based for January to August, with T-REC certificates and green power wheeling shown per site and grid average as the fallback.
5 categories calculated (purchased goods, upstream and downstream transport, waste and business travel) and the other 10 listed as not assessed or not relevant, each with its reason, never silently zero.
Emission sources across 3 plants, a warehouse and company-wide spend, 164 source-months from January to August, 22 utility bills, 15 versioned emission factors and 8 users in 5 roles.
Cuihu's first customer, Hejia Packaging, kept its carbon numbers with one engineer. Each spring a Japanese customer and two US brand owners sent emissions questionnaires, and he rebuilt the figures from photographed Taipower bills, diesel receipts, a paper refrigerant log and a finance spreadsheet. Emission factors came from whichever website he found that year, and when a verifier asked where a number came from, nobody could show the bill, the factor and the formula.
Tanji takes a company from a pile of bills and receipts to a GHG Protocol inventory a verifier can check. Site contributors upload bills and enter fuel and refrigerant data, OCR reads each bill for review, the collection tracker shows what is missing and who owes it, and every inventory figure opens its records, factor version, formula and approver.
Small manufacturers are now asked for emissions data by listed customers and foreign brand owners, but they rarely have more than one or two people to produce it. The data is scattered, the methods are strict and the numbers have to survive a verifier.
Electricity arrives as Taipower bills photographed by plant managers, fuel as receipts and fuel card exports, refrigerants as paper logs and purchased goods as finance spend. Each source has a different owner, unit and frequency, and gaps only showed up when the questionnaire was due.
The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance requires a location-based and a market-based figure where contractual instruments exist. A renewable energy certificate counts only if it matches the period and market and has been retired for this customer, so it is never claimed twice.
Taiwan's grid factor is published each year, and fuel, freight and spend-based factors come from different sources and versions. Without a versioned library and a fixed base year, figures cannot be compared from one year to the next.
Customers ask for GHG Protocol scopes, while ISO 14064-1 groups the same emissions into six categories and verification is done by an accredited body. Every reported figure has to trace back to evidence, and Scope 3 categories left out must say why.
Mapped 9 user roles, 46 screens across the workspace, verifier portal, supplier portal and operator admin, and the data model for sites, emission sources, activity records, utility bills, versioned emission factors, certificates, calculation runs, inventory lines and data quality flags. Wrote down the rules the design follows: GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-1, Taiwan's Climate Change Response Act, T-REC certificates, EU CBAM product flags and Taiwan's Personal Data Protection Act.
Built 5 key screens on a production dashboard kit: the dashboard with KPIs, emissions by scope and site, progress to target and top sources, the collection tracker with a source by month matrix, the utility bills inbox, bill review with OCR confidence and month allocation, and the inventory tree with a GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 toggle and the number trail panel. All actions run on local state.
OCR through Google Cloud Document AI or Amazon Textract, ERP spend import from SAP Business One or Dynamics 365 Business Central, travel exports from SAP Concur, factor sources such as the Energy Administration grid factor and the Ministry of Environment table, Entra ID or Google Workspace sign-in, ECPay or TapPay billing and hosting in Taiwan. Plus the verifier and supplier portals, reports, targets and initiatives, the operator admin and period locking with a full audit trail.
Click any inventory number to see the formula written out, the activity records behind it with approver and evidence, the factor with its source and release, the calculation run, and how the number changed across runs. A link can be copied for the verifier.
The collection tracker shows every source by month as approved, submitted, estimated, flagged, returned, missing or no activity, with completeness per site and overdue items by contributor. An estimate needs a method and a reason and stays flagged in the inventory.
Bill review puts the photo beside the fields read, with low-confidence fields in amber that must be confirmed. Corrections keep the original OCR value, the billing period is split across months by days, duplicates are caught by account and period, and the reading is compared with the previous 12 bills.
The same lines switch between GHG Protocol scopes and ISO 14064-1 categories. Location-based Scope 2 is shown alongside but not added to the total, biogenic CO2 sits outside the scopes, and a new factor release shows its effect per line before it is applied.
