Mojón - Farm Management with Offline Field Records and a Cooperative Console

Farm Management Platform for an Argentine Grain Cooperative

Designed and built a clickable farm management app for the member farms of a grain cooperative in Córdoba, Argentina: a field operations log, an agrochemical register that ties every spray to a signed agronomic prescription, application records ready for inspectors and grain buyers, and costs and gross margin per lot. The full design adds an offline mobile field app and a cooperative console.

Impact

5 Screens
Clickable end to end

Farm dashboard, operations log, agrochemical register, application record and costs and gross margin, plus a Record operation form that opens from any page. Each of the 20 demo application records opens its own page.

5 Spray Checks
Before a spray is saved

A prescription is required, the product must be on it, the rate must not exceed the prescribed dose, the applicator licence must be valid and lots near a sensitive zone are flagged with the distance the cooperative set.

7 Cost Lines
Gross margin per lot

Seed, fertiliser, chemicals, contractors, own machinery, rent, and freight and commercial costs, in ARS or USD, with a breakeven yield in qq/ha for every lot and expected prices that recalculate the table.

15 Lots
Realistic demo data

1,506 ha across 2 establishments, 25 field operations, 20 application records, 10 prescriptions from 3 agronomists, 3 contractors and 16 products in the cooperative catalogue.

The Problem

Tala Seca's roughly 60 member farms kept their records in paper notebooks in the pickup, WhatsApp photos of spray prescriptions, contractor invoices and a spreadsheet at the kitchen table. When an exporter asked where a soy load came from and what had been sprayed on it, the traceability officer spent days phoning members and retyping records. Agronomists' recommendations could not be matched to what was applied, and most members could not say what a lot earned per hectare until months after harvest.

Our Solution

Mojón gives each member farm one place for its field work: every operation recorded with lots, inputs, machine and people, every agrochemical application linked to its prescription, applicator, equipment, weather and withholding period, and a live gross margin per lot. The full design adds an offline mobile app for field staff and contractors and a cooperative console for purchasing, traceability reports and agronomist visits, shared only with each member's consent.

The Challenge: Field Records That Hold Up

A grain farm in Córdoba answers to provincial agrochemical rules, product labels, buyers' traceability requests and its own bottom line, and most of the work happens on lots with no phone signal, done by staff and contractors.

Every Spray Needs a Paper Trail

Córdoba's agrochemicals law (generally cited as Law 9164) requires, in general terms, a prescription signed by a registered agronomist, registered applicators and equipment, and restricted zones around towns and other sensitive places. None of that was linked to the spray that actually happened.

Withholding Periods From the Label

Each SENASA-registered product carries a label withholding period per crop. Harvesting before it runs out puts a grain load at risk, but the dates lived in notebooks and nobody checked them at harvest time.

Buyers Want Proof Per Lot

The EU Deforestation Regulation covers soy and cattle, though not maize or wheat, and asks for the geolocation of the plots where they were grown. Exporters pass that on to the cooperative as requests for lot polygons and application records, member by member.

Offline Work, Shared by Consent

Field staff and contractors record work where there is no signal. Farm records are often personal data under Argentina's Law 25.326, so the cooperative may see a member's records only for the purposes that member has switched on.

Our Approach: From Field Rules to a Clickable Farm App

01

Spec and Rules Research

Mapped 10 user roles, from farm managers, field operators and contractors to agronomists and the cooperative's purchasing and traceability officers, and 45 screens across the member farm web app, an offline mobile field app, the cooperative console and a shared buyer page. Designed the data model for lots and boundary versions, crop plans, operations, prescriptions, application records, stock, costs, consents and traceability requests, and wrote down the rules the design follows: Law 25.326, Córdoba's agrochemicals law, SENASA product registration, the empty container law (Law 27.279) and the EU Deforestation Regulation.

02

Clickable Demo on a Production UI Kit

Built 5 key screens of the member farm web app on a production dashboard kit: the farm dashboard with campaign progress by crop, 60-day rainfall with a 7-day forecast, this week's tasks and prescriptions and warnings; the operations log with filters, an operation detail panel and corrections with a reason; the agrochemical register with applications and prescriptions tabs and prescription upload; an application record page for every demo record; and costs and gross margin by lot. Saved operations appear in the log. All actions run on local state.

03

What a Production Build Adds

Mapbox maps with offline tiles, boundary import from KML, Shapefile, GeoJSON and John Deere Operations Center, machine hours and as-applied maps from John Deere, Tomorrow.io or Meteoblue weather, Global Forest Watch land cover checks, PowerSync for the offline field app, WhatsApp messages through Twilio, BCRA exchange rates and Postmark email. Farm and cooperative roles with consent-scoped access, an append-only audit log, legal review of the provincial and municipal spraying rules, and the remaining screens: farm map, lot detail, crop plan, tasks, harvest, inventory, machinery, the 7 mobile screens, the 17 console screens and the buyer report.

Why It Works: The Record Is the Proof

No Spray Without a Prescription

The Record operation form offers only prescriptions that are still valid for the chosen lot and shows the stock to be deducted, the cost and any warning before saving. Sensitive zone distances are entered by the cooperative from the rules in force, never hard-coded.

Warnings Travel With the Record

A dose above the prescription, an expired licence or an expired prescription is saved with the application record and shown at the top of its page. Records are never deleted: a correction needs a reason, and the original value stays in the history.

One Page an Inspector Can Read

Each application record shows the SENASA registration, active ingredient, toxicological band, dose prescribed against dose applied, applicator licence, equipment registration, wind, temperature and humidity at start and end, containers used, triple rinsed and returned, and the date the lot is clear to harvest.

Margins in the Farmer's Units

Yields in quintals per hectare, money in ARS with a USD toggle, rent in kilos of soy per hectare valued at the expected soy price, and a breakeven yield per lot, so a member can see which lot needs more than its target yield to cover costs while the crop is still in the ground.
